Doubt & Confusion

Saṃśaya and moha — when clarity collapses — 58 verses, starred ones first.

  1. 2.11 You grieve for those who should not be grieved for — and call it wisdom.
  2. 2.63 Anger → delusion → memory loss → intellect destroyed → total ruin. Know this chain before it starts.
  3. 7.14 This divine māyā of Mine, made of the guṇas, is hard to cross — but those who take refuge in Me alone do cross it.
  4. 8.5 Whoever at death remembers Me alone — leaving the body — attains My very Being. Of this, there is no doubt.
  5. 8.7 Therefore remember Me at all times and fight — mind and intellect fixed on Me, you will come to Me without doubt.
  6. 18.61 The Lord dwells in the heart of all beings — whirling all, as if mounted on a machine, by His māyā.
  7. 2.7 I am your student. My mind is bewildered about what is right. Teach me.
  8. 6.33 O Madhusūdana — I see no stable foundation for this yoga: the mind's restlessness defeats all steadiness.
  9. 7.1 With mind attached, practising yoga, taking refuge in Me — hear how you shall know Me fully, without doubt.
  10. 7.13 Deluded by the three guṇa-constituted states, all this world does not recognize Me — beyond them, imperishable.
  11. 18.73 Destroyed is my delusion, memory restored by Your grace — I stand firm, free of doubt, and will do Your word.
  12. 1.10 A famously ambiguous verse: Duryodhana either boasts of limitless strength or admits hidden doubt.
  13. 2.6 He doesn't even know if winning is preferable — because those he'd kill are those without whom life has no meaning.
  14. 2.52 When your mind crosses the fog of delusion, you'll outgrow both past teachings and future ones.
  15. 3.1 Arjuna's honest confusion: if wisdom is better than action, why push me into this terrible fight?
  16. 3.2 Tell me clearly: what ONE thing leads to the highest good? Your mixed speech confuses me.
  17. 4.6 Though unborn, imperishable, Lord of all — I come into being through My own Māyā. Divine birth is free, not compelled.
  18. 4.16 Even the wise are confused about action vs. inaction. I will explain — knowing this frees you from all wrong.
  19. 4.35 Knowing this you will not fall into delusion again — you will see all beings in the Self, and thus in Me.
  20. 4.40 The ignorant, faithless, doubting self is destroyed — no happiness in this world, the next, or anywhere.
  21. 4.41 Action renounced through yoga, doubt cut by knowledge, self-possessed — actions cannot bind that person.
  22. 4.42 Cut with jñāna's sword this doubt born of ignorance in your heart. Stand in yoga — arise, O Arjuna!
  23. 5.15 The all-pervading Lord takes neither sin nor merit from anyone — ignorance veils knowledge and deludes all beings.
  24. 5.16 When knowledge destroys ignorance of the Self, it illumines the Supreme — like the sun dispelling darkness.
  25. 5.25 Seers with sins destroyed, doubts cut, self-controlled, devoted to all beings' welfare — they attain brahma-nirvāṇa.
  26. 6.39 O Krishna — cut this doubt of mine completely, without remainder. No one other than You can resolve what I am asking.
  27. 7.15 The evildoer, the deluded, the lowest of men, those whose knowledge māyā has stolen — these do not take refuge in Me.
  28. 7.25 Veiled by yoga-māyā, I am not manifest to all — this deluded world does not recognize Me, the Unborn, the Imperishable.
  29. 7.27 All beings fall into complete delusion at birth — through the dvandva-moha arising from desire and aversion.
  30. 8.27 Knowing both paths, no yogi is deluded. Therefore, O Arjuna, be steadfast in yoga at all times.
  31. 10.7 Who truly knows My vibhūtis and yoga-power becomes united in unshakeable yoga — of this there is no doubt.
  32. 10.11 Out of compassion, I dwell in their hearts and destroy the darkness of ignorance with the luminous lamp of wisdom.
  33. 11.1 My delusion is gone — dispersed by Your compassionate words on the Self and its deep mysteries.
  34. 11.11 Crowned with celestial garlands and divine robes — the All-wonderful, Resplendent, Boundless God facing all sides!
  35. 11.14 Overwhelmed with wonder, hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed and spoke to the God with joined palms.
  36. 11.34 Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa — all already slain by Me! You kill them. Fear not — fight! You shall conquer!
  37. 11.47 Through My own yogic power I showed you this radiant, infinite, primeval cosmic form — which no one else has ever seen!
  38. 12.8 Fix your mind in Me alone, enter your intellect in Me — you shall dwell in Me hereafter, without doubt!
  39. 13.12 Constant Self-enquiry + seeing the goal of true knowledge = THIS IS JÑĀNA; all else is ignorance.
  40. 14.13 Darkness, inertness, heedlessness, and delusion arise — know that tamas is predominant.
  41. 14.17 Sattva begets wisdom; rajas begets greed; tamas begets heedlessness, delusion, and ignorance.
  42. 14.22 The guṇātīta neither hates light, activity, or delusion when present — nor yearns for them when absent.
  43. 15.19 Knowing Me as Puruṣottama without delusion, one becomes all-knowing and worships Me with whole being.
  44. 16.4 Six āsurī qualities: dambha, darpa, abhimāna, krodha, pāruṣya, ajñāna — all rooted in ego-assertion and ignorance.
  45. 16.7 The āsurī know neither pravṛtti nor nivṛtti; purity, good conduct, and truth are all absent in them.
  46. 16.10 Driven by insatiable kāma, hypocrisy, pride and arrogance, gripping false notions through moha — impure resolves.
  47. 16.14 'I slew that enemy; I'll slay others. I am Lord, Enjoyer, Perfect, Powerful, Happy' — the ego-apotheosis of the āsurī.
  48. 16.16 Many thoughts, moha-net covering them, addicted to kāma-enjoyments — they fall into impure naraka.
  49. 17.10 Tāmasic food: stale, flavorless, putrid, overnight-old, others' remnants, impure — dear to those immersed in tamas.
  50. 17.15 Speech tapas: non-disturbing, true, agreeable, beneficial words — plus daily svādhyāya (sacred study).
  51. 17.19 Tāmasic tapas: done with foolish delusion, self-torture, or to destroy another — declared tāmasic.
  52. 18.7 Renouncing ordained/niyata karma is not appropriate; its abandonment through delusion is declared tāmasic.
  53. 18.10 The sāttvic tyāgī: neither hates difficult action nor clings to pleasant — sattva-pervaded, wise, doubts severed.
  54. 18.39 Tāmasic sukha: deluding of the self both at start and in consequence — arises from sleep, laziness, and carelessness.
  55. 18.62 Take refuge in THAT with all your being, O Bharata — by His grace: supreme peace and the eternal abode.
  56. 18.68 Whoever teaches this supreme secret among My devotees, with supreme bhakti — comes to Me without doubt.
  57. 18.69 No one among humans does dearer service to Me, nor is there another dearer to Me on earth, than the Gita-teacher.
  58. 18.72 O Pārtha, was this heard with one-pointed mind? O Dhanañjaya, has the delusion of ignorance been completely destroyed?
