The Yoga of Knowledge and Action

Jnana Karma Sanyasa Yoga

  1. 4.1 I taught this imperishable yoga to the sun-god at the dawn of time — it has been passed down through kings ever since.
  2. 4.2 Royal sages received this yoga through succession — but vast time destroyed it. That is why it must be re-taught.
  3. 4.3 I give you this ancient yoga today because you are My devotee and friend — this is the supreme secret.
  4. 4.4 Arjuna: You were born after Vivasvān — how could You have taught him at the start of time?
  5. 4.5 Both of us have had many births. I know all of them — you do not. That is the difference.
  6. 4.6 Though unborn, imperishable, Lord of all — I come into being through My own Māyā. Divine birth is free, not compelled.
  7. 4.7 Whenever dharma declines and adharma rises — I project Myself forth. The divine responds to every crisis.
  8. 4.8 For the protection of the good, destruction of wickedness, establishment of dharma — I come, age after age.
  9. 4.9 Whoever truly knows My divine birth and action — leaving the body, they do not return. They come to Me.
  10. 4.10 Many, freed from attachment, fear, and anger, purified by knowledge-austerity — have attained My being.
  11. 4.11 However you approach Me — I respond in that same way. All human paths ultimately follow My path.
  12. 4.12 Those seeking results worship the gods who grant results. Quick success comes from action in the human world.
  13. 4.13 Four varnas arise by guna and karma — not by birth. Though creator, I remain the non-doer, imperishable.
  14. 4.14 Actions don't taint Me — I have no longing for their fruits. Whoever knows Me thus is not bound by their actions.
  15. 4.15 The ancient seekers of liberation knew this — and they acted. Therefore you too must act, following the ancients.
  16. 4.16 Even the wise are confused about action vs. inaction. I will explain — knowing this frees you from all wrong.
  17. 4.17 Three things must be understood: action, wrong-action, inaction. The nature of action is deep and impenetrable.
  18. 4.18 Seeing inaction in action, action in inaction — that one is wise, a yogi, a complete doer of all actions.
  19. 4.19 All actions free from desire and intention; karmas burned by jñāna's fire — the wise call this one paṇḍita.
  20. 4.20 Attachment to fruits abandoned, ever content, no dependence — fully active yet truly doing nothing at all.
  21. 4.21 No longing, controlled mind, no possessions — acting only through the body, one incurs no sin at all.
  22. 4.22 Content with what comes by chance, beyond opposites, free from envy — equal in success and failure, not bound.
  23. 4.23 For the liberated one — attachment gone, mind settled in knowledge, acting for yajna — all karma completely dissolves.
  24. 4.24 Instrument, offering, fire, act, destination — all Brahman. One absorbed in Brahman-action reaches Brahman alone.
  25. 4.25 Some offer to the gods as yajna. Others offer yajna itself into the fire of Brahman — the practice becomes the offering.
  26. 4.26 Some offer the senses into restraint's fire. Others offer sense-objects into the senses' fire. Both are valid yajna.
  27. 4.27 All sense-actions, all vital-breath actions — offered into the fire of self-mastery yoga, kindled by knowledge.
  28. 4.28 Wealth, austerity, yoga, self-study, knowledge — all valid yajna for ascetics with sharpened vows.
  29. 4.29 Offering prāṇa into apāna, apāna into prāṇa — the breath itself becomes yajna for those devoted to prāṇāyāma.
  30. 4.30 Regulated food, prāṇas offered into prāṇas — ALL these are knowers of yajna; yajna destroys all their impurities.
  31. 4.31 Those who eat yajna's remnants reach eternal Brahman. Without offering, not even this world is theirs.
  32. 4.32 Many forms of yajna spread through Brahman's mouth — all born of action. Knowing this, you will be freed.
  33. 4.33 Knowledge-yajna surpasses all material sacrifice. Every action without exception culminates in knowledge.
  34. 4.34 Approach the teacher with prostration, inquiry, and service. The knowers of truth will instruct you in jñāna.
  35. 4.35 Knowing this you will not fall into delusion again — you will see all beings in the Self, and thus in Me.
  36. 4.36 Even the most sinful — the boat of knowledge carries you across all wrong. No sin is too great for jñāna.
  37. 4.37 As fire reduces wood to ash, so jñānāgni burns all karmas completely to ash.
  38. 4.38 Nothing in this world purifies like jñāna. The karma-yogi finds it within themselves in time.
  39. 4.39 The faithful, devoted, sense-controlled person attains jñāna — and quickly reaches supreme peace.
  40. 4.40 The ignorant, faithless, doubting self is destroyed — no happiness in this world, the next, or anywhere.
  41. 4.41 Action renounced through yoga, doubt cut by knowledge, self-possessed — actions cannot bind that person.
  42. 4.42 Cut with jñāna's sword this doubt born of ignorance in your heart. Stand in yoga — arise, O Arjuna!
