A modern analogy
Like listing everything you owe to someone — breath, sustenance, beauty, consciousness, mortality — and then finding that the list is so vast that you stop making a list and just say 'thank you' repeatedly, knowing it's never enough.
Sit with this: Arjuna finds that salutation a thousand times still isn't enough — so he says 'and again and again.' Have you ever felt that gratitude exceeded any possible expression? What does it feel like when appreciation overflows the capacity of language?
V39's divine catalog (Vāyu-Yama-Agni-Varuṇa-Śaśāṅka-Prajāpati-Prapitāmaha) is a stotra (hymn) in miniature — a Vedic-style identification of the Divine with the cosmic forces. Each name represents a cosmic function: air, death, fire, water, moon-light, generation, lineage-origin. Together they cover the complete cycle of cosmic process. The sahasra-kṛtvaḥ namo namas (a thousand times salutation) then overflows the naming-structure: the catalog has ended but praise continues. The multiplication of salutations (namo + namas + namo + namas) shows that the recognition of divine ubiquity produces not just knowledge but devotional overflow. This is bhakti epistemology: knowing more = loving more.
Bhakti lens
The sahasra-kṛtvaḥ (thousand times) salutation is bhakti's recognition of divine inexhaustibility. In the Nāmāvali (litany of names) tradition of bhakti, reciting divine names is itself the practice — not because each repetition adds information but because each repetition deepens the connection. The Viṣṇu-sahasranāma (Thousand Names of Viṣṇu) is the natural evolution of V39's sahasra-kṛtvaḥ namas. Arjuna's overflow of salutation in V39 = the germinal impulse that becomes the bhakti litany tradition.
